Question of the Day #161 · August 31, 2026
In professional baseball, what is the ruling if a pitcher throws a ball that hits the dirt before the batter swings and hits it over the fence?
Show answer
Home run
A pitch that bounces remains live, so the batter can legally strike it and put it in play. If that hit clears the outfield fence in fair territory, it counts as a home run just like one hit from a pitch in the air.
