Question of the Day #58 · May 20, 2026
When James Naismith invented basketball in 1891, what were used as the goals before the invention of the metal rim and net?
Show answer
Peach baskets
Naismith’s original basketball goals were ordinary peach baskets, giving the new sport a distinctly improvised beginning. Their enclosed bottoms also made every successful shot less convenient than with today’s open nets.
