Question of the Day #32 · April 24, 2026
Before becoming world-famous, which artist was questioned as a suspect in the 1911 theft of the Mona Lisa?
Show answer
Pablo Picasso
Picasso came under suspicion because he possessed Iberian statuettes stolen from the Louvre by Géry Pieret, a former secretary of his friend Guillaume Apollinaire. Picasso and Apollinaire were quickly released; former Louvre worker Vincenzo Peruggia was caught with the Mona Lisa in 1913.
