Which red hypergiant in the constellation Scutum was widely cited as the largest known star in the universe for much of the 2010s?

Show answer

UY Scuti

UY Scuti is so massive that if it replaced the Sun at the center of our solar system, its surface would extend beyond the orbit of Jupiter. While it held the title of largest star for much of the 2010s, its exact size is difficult to measure because it is a pulsating variable star surrounded by a large cloud of dust. It remains one of the most luminous stars known, shining hundreds of thousands of times brighter than our Sun.
