Which 1884–1885 diplomatic meeting among European powers regulated colonization and trade in Africa, formalizing the "Scramble for Africa"?
Show answer
Berlin Conference
Organized by Otto von Bismarck, the conference adopted rules concerning notification and effective authority for new colonial claims on Africa's coasts. It accelerated European partition, but it did not itself draw most of Africa's borders; those were largely negotiated afterward, often without regard for existing societies.
