What name was given to the extensive system of French border fortifications that German forces famously bypassed by invading through Belgium in 1940?
Show answer
Maginot Line
Named after French war minister André Maginot, the line included formidable bunkers and underground transport systems. In 1940 Germany largely outflanked its main defenses through Belgium and the Ardennes rather than defeating them head-on, and “Maginot Line” subsequently became a metaphor for misplaced confidence in fixed defenses.
