According to the UN's 2025 harmonized estimates, which city ranked first in population in 2000 but third by 2025?

Show answer

Tokyo

For decades, Tokyo held the title of the world's most populous city, peaking as a global megacity during Japan's period of rapid urban growth. While it has been overtaken by Delhi and Shanghai in recent UN estimates, it remains the largest metropolitan economy on Earth. This shift reflects a broader trend of rapid urbanization across Asia compared to Japan’s aging and naturally declining population.
