What term describes the observable characteristics of an organism, as determined by its genes and environment?
Show answer
Phenotype
While a genotype is the set of genes an organism carries, the phenotype is the actual physical expression of those traits, such as height or eye color. Environmental factors often influence these traits, such as how a flamingo's pink feathers are a phenotypic trait determined by the pigments in its diet. A helpful way to remember the difference is that 'phenotype' starts with 'P' for 'physical' characteristics.
