In theatrical blocking, what term refers to the area of the stage that is furthest away from the audience?
Show answer
Upstage
The term originates from the era when stages were raked, or tilted, so that the back of the stage was physically higher than the front. To "upstage" another actor originally meant standing behind them, forcing them to turn their back to the audience to maintain eye contact.
